Clearing the Browser Tabs – The Playoffs are Set Sunday Edition

Posted: 10 Apr 2011 03:10 AM PDT

My beloved Washington Capitals will face the New York Rangers in the first round of the NHL playoffs. I really didn’t want the Caps to face the Rangers, since they didn’t fare well against them in the regular season, but no one gets to pick their playoff opponent. The Carolina Hurricanes had a chance to play the Caps in the post season, but they lost their most important game of the year and so it’s John Tortorella’s crew. At least I’ll get the pleasure of booing Sean Avery and mocking Henrik Lundqvist’s glove hand for a few games — hopefully no more than four — starting Wednesday night.

Another Reason to Like the Boehner Budget Deal: DC Kids Win

Posted: 09 Apr 2011 12:38 PM PDT

My what a wonderful little surprise I found this morning!

On Friday night, before the details of the final deal became clear, [D.C. Representative Eleanor Holmes] Norton said, "We are in great danger of becoming bargained as we feared, despite my conversation with Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid a few days ago, and the many conversations I have had with the Administration."

The D.C. Opportunity Scholarship Program — which provides low-income District students with federal money to attend private schools — is a top priority of Speaker John Boehner (R-Ohio). The program was closed to new entrants by Democrats in 2009, but Boehner has sought to revive and expand the program. The House passed a Boehner-authored bill last month — the SOAR Act — to reauthorize the program for five more years, and that bill will be included in the final spending deal and signed into law by Obama.

[Emphasis mine]

That is a huge win for the children of Washington, D.C. and a blow against the teachers’ unions who fought the successful program with all their might. Good on John Boehner for making sure it was part of the deal and for backing down the Democrats who so vociferously opposed it.

Clearing the Browser Tabs – Hard-Liner Unhappiness Saturday Edition

Posted: 09 Apr 2011 12:31 PM PDT

When I went to bed in the wee hours of this morning, I knew that the post I wrote on John Boehner’s budget deal wasn’t going to be the majority opinion among the True Conservatives on the right, and I was right. Mark Levin hated the deal and all but called it fraudulent and an embarrassing defeat. Andrew McCarthy rained all over the parade as well with what I think are some pretty predictable objections. Jeff Goldstein wrote that Boehner got “crumbs”.

Take those objections for what I think they are — cries of despair from earnest and well-intentioned conservatives who see the approximately $50 billion in total cuts (I disagree with Levin on the overall total) as a very small drop in a raging deficit ocean. As I wrote this morning, I entirely understand (and to a large extent, share) the urge to fight to the bitter end, no matter if that end involves a big loss.

Stacy McCain hewed to a middle path as did Dan Mitchell. I think their analysis will prove the most accurate in the end (and see Philip Klein for a straightforward, but optimistic, rundown), though I don’t mind doing a slightly more muted victory dance than the ones being done at the Strata-Sphere and Potluck.
