Clearing the Browser Tabs – Herman Cain Ascending Tuesday Edition

Posted: 11 Oct 2011 03:10 AM PDT

I’ve heard for months that Herman Cain can not win the Republican nomination and that, if by some fluke of politics he did, he could never win the White House. His naysayers among my conservative friends cite one reason almost unanimously: he has never held elected office. They don’t have major problems with the policy plans he’s released, at least no greater problem than they’d have with plans put out by other candidates. They like his ability to inspire and the way he is enthusiastically received by every crowd to which he speaks. They acknowledge his business acumen.

They simply don’t believe that any of the skills he’s developed over forty years of working in the business, financial, and political worlds.

I may write about that more, because I believe my friends are dead wrong. And, as is becoming apparent, so do a good number of potential voters. For the first time, Gallup’s poll shows Cain within easy striking distance of the Republican front-runner Mitt Romney.

Why are voters flocking to Cain? I think there are good two reasons. First, Cain has gone on national television more often than Romney or Rick Perry combined. While he’s made missteps, he’s improved markedly and has even begun to throw his own punches at the obviously biased questions he’s received. He is open and honest, even if that means he says something wrong and has to go back and correct himself. Voters, I think, are tired of mush-mouthed politicians who are so afraid of even the slightest misstep that they won’t speak their minds. Cain does that and it’s earned him a healthy amount of slack.

Second, Republican voters like his 9-9-9 plan. Rasmussen released a poll yesterday that showed 56% of Republicans like his plan once they know what the essential pieces are. I admit, his plan is far from perfect. It’s going to need some adjustments to make sure that Congress can’t monkey with the sales tax part, especially. Ideally, I’d like to see it coupled with a spending cap tied to GDP, but that can come in a few months. What is important now is that Cain’s plan is far easier to grasp than the 59-point plan of Mitt Romney’s that I doubt more than a handful of people have read through entirely (and I’m not even sure that Romney’s part of that handful). It’s a far sight better than the plan Rick Perry has relea…wait a minute. Rick Perry hasn’t released an economic plan yet. There is a rumor he might give a speech to that effect on Friday; that is, if he can spare any time from attacking Mitt Romney.

Okay, maybe I won’t write more about this, since I seem to have written quite a bit already. But let me make one last point. I noticed a couple weeks ago that Romney has spent a lot of time attacking Perry and vice versa but Cain has spent most of his time attacking Barack Obama. I don’t think we can underestimate how much people like it when Herman Cain defends America from yet another petulant Obama speech or whinge-fest from his devoted followers. He has coupled that with a simple and positive message of love for and faith in America. Voters like that; they always have.

I’m sure the naysayers will continue to laugh at Cain, deride him as a novelty candidate, or as a liar whose campaign is nothing more than a stalking horse for Mitt Romney (his friend for many years, for goodness’ sake!) but he’s gotten more traction with the voting public in two weeks than any Republican in the race. Obviously, he’s doing something right.

Don’t forget tonight’s live recording of The Delivery. I have a couple or three pages of notes for the show already and it’s a good bet you’ll hear more about the Occupy Whatever movement. I also plan to talk a bit about Steve Jobs and why you don’t need to be a genius visionary to find his philosophy useful. We kick off a little before 9:30 PM ET with a little pre-show warmup, and I’d love to see you there!

And now, links!
