Clearing the Browser Tabs – Bitly Thursday Edition

Posted: 24 Feb 2011 08:33 AM PST

There is a good reason today’s post didn’t come out at O’Dark Thirty this morning: Twitter. I use Twitter more than any other social-media or web tool to promote The Shack. I found out last night that blog posts, which normally get tweeted thanks to a very handy and reliable WordPress plugin weren’t. Also, there was a some type of problem with the Echofon program I use for Twitter. Both of those problems centered around the bit.ly link-shortening service that both programs use. Given the problems in Libya right now (which is the host for the .ly extension), I figured I’d wait until later in the day to post this, in the hopes that the situation would resolve itself.

Which it apparently has. So, that’s good. Otherwise, I would have to tweet my blog posts manually, which is a bit of a pain.

And now, links!

President Obama Channels Judge Dredd, Reeks of Desperation

Posted: 23 Feb 2011 09:23 PM PST

Today, President Barack Obama did something I don’t think I’ve ever seen a President do. He ordered the Department of Justice not to enforce the Defense of Marriage Act because he believes it is unconstitutional.

Attorney General Eric H. Holder Jr. said in a statement released Wednesday that President Obama has decided that his administration "will cease defense of Section 3," which states that marriage is between one man and one woman.

"[T]he President has concluded that given a number of factors, including a documented history of discrimination, classifications based on sexual orientation should be subject to a more heightened standard of scrutiny," Mr. Holder said. "The President has also concluded that Section 3 of DOMA, as applied to legally married same-sex couples, fails to meet that standard and is therefore unconstitutional. Given that conclusion, the President has instructed the Department not to defend the statute in such cases. I fully concur with the President's determination."

There is no way this will end well, for a couple reasons. First, the President is already on a Slip and  Slide toward a giant pool of hot water because his Justice Department decided to selectively enforce voting rights laws. His administration is already in contempt of court for ignoring a judge’s order to lift the Gulf drilling moratorium. The President, and quite a lot of his staff, are in a world of legal hurt, and this won’t help one bit, as it confirms the pattern that this President truly believes himself above the laws that govern we mortals.

Second, this move will cement the growing opinion around the country that the President is not, in fact, the post-partisan master of rainbows and unicorns, but a rank political operative who’ll use his most ardent followers to take heat off himself. Make no mistake, folks, this is a political move. His union buddies are taking a beating, he’s proven himself worse than incompetent on foreign policy, and his approval numbers are headed south faster than a flock of jet-propelled geese in November. He desperately needs something to pull the headlines off of Wisconsin, Indiana, Libya, and Egypt and his little Judge Dredd-like “I am The Law” act is his attempt to get that done.

My guess is that he’s hoping that much of the right will take the bait he’s tossed toward them and rise up in a wave of indignation against his disregard for the rule of law. I don’t think that will happen nearly to the extent he wants, especially if, as Ed Morrissey writes, this looks a lot bigger than it actually is (via memeorandum) Don’t be surprised, though if you see the MSM on this story, eager to report the faintest peep against it as if it were a shout.

Barack Obama, like Judge Dredd, wants us to believe he is the law

Unions Goon Demonstrates, Escalates, but Fails to Intimidate

Posted: 23 Feb 2011 07:48 PM PST

On Tuesday, Democratic Congressman Michael Capuano said this to a crowd of union members.

“I'm proud to be here with people who understand that it's more than just sending an email to get you going…Every once and awhile you need to get out on the streets and get a little bloody when necessary.”
[emphasis mine]

Less than 24 hours later, a union thug did this to my friend Tabitha Hale “out on the streets” in front of her office in Washington, DC.

Now, here’s the thing. That goon was there as a member of the Communications Workers of America union to protest the “budget repair” legislation proposed in Wisconsin by Governor Scott Walker. However, the CWA is a private union, not a public sector union that would be affected by the bill and today’s protest was at the FreedomWorks HQ in Washington, DC, nowhere near Governor Walker or Wisconsin.

So why were they there? It’s not like they could influence Governor Walker’s decision, nor the decision of any Wisconsin legislator. There presence wouldn’t change a single poll number in a state hundreds of miles away.

But there was a reason they were there, and it’s as nasty and un-American as you can imagine. FreedomWorks, as you may know, has been heavily involved in helping Tea Parties get off the ground all over the country. As a result, its employees have been the frequent target of attack by the left. Though it was not directly involved in this past weekend’s counter-demonstration beyond this post on the group’s web site, apparently someone powerful on the left felt it was, and so they sent their doltish minions to intimidate FreedomWorks’ employees.

As you can see from the video, their tactic didn’t work. Tabitha is not a big person on the outside, but she has the heart of a giant. I know, even though I’ve not spoken directly to her, that the attack on her today will only give her a bigger reason to break the backs of the public sector unions and their stranglehold on our states’ budgets. To borrow a famous phrase from President Obama, the CWA acted stupidly.

The Delivery Presents – This is What A Daily Delivery Would Sound Like

Posted: 23 Feb 2011 12:58 PM PST

Pure, unfettered fun.

That’s how I choose to describe what it was like to make Episode 79. Stephen Green and Ed Driscoll came on for the full hour and were their usual witty and ridiculously smart selves. As I wrote in a post this morning, if I’m ever fortunate enough to do The Delivery daily, I’d have them one once a week. At least.

As for the fun, well, if you have never watched the live show, you really should. There aren’t many radio hosts (or even podcasters) who let you see behind the scenes of their show as they’re making it, at least not for free. The only one I know of who comes close to offering that is Rush Limbaugh, and you have to be a paid member of the club to see the Rush Cam. There may be others who do a show that blends politics and pop culture and turns on a web cam and interact with listeners before, during, and after they’re on the air, but I’ve not seen them. The Delivery is unique, and I like that. I think you will, too, especially once you’ve gotten hooked on the funny and interesting chat that happens as the show goes on.

Don’t forget to visit the show’s Facebook fan page. Feel free to leave a comment, “like” it, and share it with all your friends.
