I Still Believe in Miracles: 31 Years Ago Posted: 23 Feb 2011 09:02 AM PST On February 22, 1980 — 31 years ago yesterday — this happened. I still get goosebumps and choke up just a little bit every time I year Al Michaels exclaim, “Do you believe in miracles?? YES!” What I did now know was that the only reason Michaels was there was because he was the only ABC announcer who had any hockey experience (which amounted to exactly one game). I pulled that from a neat article on ten things you may not have known about that game. This column, on how Herb Brooks decided to harness the spirit of America to drive his team, is also a good read, though the writer can’t help but injecting a few misguided political statements of his own. I admit that I’m a sucker for American success stories, especially in the movies. I loved Kurt Russel’s portrayal of Herb Brooks in Miracle, Rocky still thrills me, and the scene where 35 year-old rookie pitcher Jimmy Morris gets his first major league strikeout in The Rookie earns a fist-pump just about every time I see it. The Miracle on Ice, though, was a bona fide American success story that played out right in front of us and helped lift us out of the long, dreary Carter years of recession, gas rationing, and humiliation by punk totalitarians and socialists. It taught us that the stuff we had been raised to believe about hard work and striving for seemingly-impossible goals still worked and revived long-needed pride in our country and our countrymen. I can’t get enough of that. I long for more of it, especially these days when it’s cool to smash-mouth America and her citizens, even if you are (and perhaps especially if you are) the President. Maybe you feel the same way.

Clearing the Browser Tabs – Delivery Wednesday Edition Posted: 23 Feb 2011 03:10 AM PST I know I’ve slipped into the habit of hyping The Delivery on Wednesday, but I can’t really help it. I love making the show and I get excited when I can roll out a new one. If I could, I’d do the show every day (and perhaps one day I’ll be in the position to do just that, but that’s down the road a piece). Should that ever happen, by the way, I’ll have this week’s guests, Stephen Green and Ed Driscoll, on once a week, every week they can make it. The show will be up a little bit later this morning, so block out an hour and prepare yourself for an hour of good radio! And now, links! So Mitch Daniels really stepped in it yesterday, when he seemed to side with Indiana Democrats who fled the state rather than do their jobs. For what it’s worth, I believe I understand what he was trying to do (and Tim Carney explained why Indiana Republicans picked the wrong fight)  but, as Steve Green says on this week’s podcast, he needed to adjust to the political moment and didn’t. That, alone, will dim the ardor of those who saw him as a viable 2012 candidate. John Thune isn’t going to run for President, which makes a number of people I know quite sad. I don’t think he was going to make it very far into the primaries, not with his clear affection for the tasty pork of ethanol subsidies. Union SUPERPOWER! It’s Steven Crowder, so it’s funny. Old Line Elephant has an excellent, and lengthy, e-mail interview with Herman Cain. I’ve gone on about Cain at length here at The Shack, so I won’t belabor the point (for now), but do block out a little time to read OLE’s post. I think you’ll like it. I think I blew out every schadenfreude meter in a ten mile radius when I saw Donald Rumsfeld completely destroy Andrea Mitchell’s attempt to bust his chops in what should have been a relatively straightforward interview. Britain’s NHS is going under, quickly. It makes you wonder why our President is in such a hurry to take us into a system that has failed so utterly. What is the tie between Fidel Castro and Madison, Wisconsin? Let Jay Nordlinger, by way of the Babalu Blog, tell you. On a related note, celebrities love them some Qaddafi. When I ponder what celebrity interview would "get EVERYONE watching…." and be a "must-watch", I never think of Larry King. Piers Morgan, on the other hand, does, which explains why his ratings are so bad (via mediagazer) Here is a neat video representation of all the multiple-planet systems thus far discovered by the Kepler spacecraft. There are a lot of them.
