Bloggers Meet the Cain Train

Posted: 11 Feb 2011 04:30 AM PST

Herman Cain, who is exploring a run for the White House in 2012, dropped by the CPAC Bloggers’ Row yesterday afternoon to talk to us and take a few questions. I broke out the Flip Cam and got all of his remarks. Some of them are a little bit hard to hear because of ambient conversation and the speeches happening in the main hall. I think you can make out all of what he said.

Here are a couple or three things to listen for:

1) The first question is from a libertarian associate of mine who believes Cain a bailout supporter because he backed the original TARP program. Cain’s answer is a pretty firm rebuke of that position.

2) He addressed any potential health issues by telling us he is fully recovered from Stage 4 cancer. He also proclaimed himself healthier than some of the others who might run for President in the near future.

3) Peter (Da Tech Guy) got an interesting answer about Cain’s ability to raise volunteers and grassroots support. Duane Lester caught the one eye-popping statistic Cain gave us. If he has gotten that much action from people who want to volunteer, then I’m not nearly as concerned about his ability to raise money as I was.

Full disclosure: I like Herman Cain quite a bit. If the election were held today, I’d vote for him.

Clearing the Browser Tabs – CPAC Roundup Friday Edition

Posted: 11 Feb 2011 03:10 AM PST

Well, Day One of CPAC is in the books and, all in all, it was relatively drama-free. No one rent their clothes and sat upon a heap of ashes nor were any gay conservatives consumed by fire from above. The real news was made where it should be made — at the speakers’ podium.

Blog Bash was a great success this year, thanks to the tireless work and supreme organizing skills of Tabitha Hale, Melissa Clouthier, and Ali Akbar. Many kudos to all of them for pulling off a great little shindig.

I’ll be back at it again today, hopefully with a more solid internet connection. If all goes well, there should be blog posts (both CPAC-related and not so much) and perhaps a video or two. I’m thinking of giving you a little video tour of Bloggers’ Row. If I can pull it off, it should be fun to watch.

And now, links!

The Group that Makes the President Angry at CPAC 2011.

Posted: 10 Feb 2011 01:33 PM PST

I just finished sitting in on a blogger luncheon with the folks from Citizens United, and it was a lot more interesting than I thought it would be. I realize that seems like a terribly backhanded complement, but I do not mean it to be.  CPAC is jam-packed with activist groups who want our attention, time, and money. Citizens United is certainly no different in that respect, but David Bosse and his crew bring a refreshing straightforwardness to their approach that impresses me.

They tell stories and they’re very good at it. Sometimes the story is a criticism of a political candidate (such as the documentary about Hilary Clinton that spawned their successful Supreme Court case) and sometimes it’s a history of the rise of women in the conservative movement. Their movies are very watchable and, well, fun! They’re worth checking out.

It’s also a bonus that our President, who is good with freedom of speech so long as you’re saying what he wants you to say, has criticized Citizens United directly in his speeches. They must be doing something right to have drawn that sort of attention. Take a minute to check them out, and I say that not because I ate a turkey sandwich on their dime, but because they’re good folks and deserve the attention.

Live-ish, From CPAC!

Posted: 10 Feb 2011 09:58 AM PST

CPAC 2011, What can I say? The fame! The politics! The absolutely rancid internet connection!

I’m actually writing this from my new blogging basecamp in a back hallway behind Bloggers’ Row. The good news is that I think I can get a couple blog entries written today. The bad news is that I can’t actually see or hear anything that’s happening, except for distant cheering from what I think was Newt Gingrich’s speech.

So what you’re likely to get is second-hand blogging as other bloggers pass y my position and tell me what has happened in the main ballroom. Yep, folks, I’m blogging CPAC second-hand, just as I would if I were sitting in my living room, watching CPAC Live and reading my Twitter feed. Genius!

For now, enjoy this post from Stacy McCain, who has managed to find a decent connection somewhere. He has yet to divulge his secret blogging spot with me, but I have some hope that he will. Maybe if I buy him a beer…
