Clearing the Browser Tabs – The Last Educational Straw Sunday Edition Posted: 21 Aug 2011 03:10 AM PDT I’m going to go out on a limb here and say that this story of how a teacher named Jana Dean intentionally and dishonestly pushed her global warming cult beliefs on innocent children should be the final straw for most of us. I won’t even give you the caveat that there are good teachers out there and we should be careful about what we say so we don’t vilify the wrong people. That simply won’t cut it anymore. I bet if you went into the average school, you’d be lucky to find ten teachers you’d consider “good”. My very educated guess is that you’d find more than a few bad ones, a huge number of barely-adequate ones who meet whatever ridiculously low standard the state has set for productivity and a small handful of standouts. That is simply not good enough. Our modern education system is broken beyond repair. We have abdicated our responsibility to make sure the next generation has the tools it needs to succeed. And when I say “we” I mean everyone because education is critical even if you don’t have children in a school system. The next generation of workers have to come from somewhere, and if we allow our schools to produce little but undereducated, unmotivated, incurious graduates, we’re going to get a whole lot of bad customer service, less innovation, and less entrepreneurship. That’s bad for all of us. The worst thing about the story is that Ms. Dean not only cheated her children out of hours of learning time but also that she boasted about it in a journal article. There will be other teachers who follow her example and pump more propaganda into the minds of more children. It has to stop. We have to stop it. And now, links! - We did it! Not only did Chris Muir hit his fundraising mark for the year, he went over it so far that the next one won’t be for 13 months instead of the usual 12. Thanks to all of you who kicked in a bit to help my friend!
- This Mark Steyn column on the Imperial President is a must-read. Appearances matter, and our President is giving us the appearance of a man who could care less how much of our money he spends or what we have to say about it.
- Any good jobs plan for the United States must involve free trade agreements with reliable partners who have growing economies. South Korea, Colombia, and Panama fit those requirements nicely. Remember, we’re still buying goods from them — that won’t change with a free trade agreement. What will change is that they will be able to buy our goods unhampered by high tariffs. That’s good for all of us.
- Instead of carping and complaining when another American company packs up for overseas, or worst yet, slapping some silly law down that punishes everyone and accomplishes nothing, perhaps we should calm ourselves and look at why the company moved. When we figure out the why — and trust me, it has nothing to do with corporate greed — then we can figure out how to intelligently pare down our laws so that countries find it in their interests to stay. And while we’re at it, we might also examine why millionaires flee some states for others.
- I think we need an unwritten rule. If there is a law anywhere that prevents a woman dying from cancer from holding a yard sale so she can pay down her medical bills, we should ignore it then repeal it immediately.
- The Cadillac Volt: a beta male’s worst nightmare. It’s also not so great for the taxpayer who have laid out a ton of cash to the automaker to fulfill the Homer Simpson-like dream Barack Obama has of being a car maker.
- Sarah Rumpf is right — Andrew Malcolm is a heck of a good guy.
- Look! Cheesecake!
- I’d like to be a little more brusque than my friend Ed Driscoll. If you really did believe that Barack Obama was the human equivalent of a Care Bear, you should hide from the rest of the country in shame for at least a year or so. At the very least, you should stop writing columns in a national newspaper.
- If you’re a hard-core stargazer, you’re going to get one really good chance to see Neptune this year. It’s coming up very soon, so break out the telescope and let me know what you see.
