Clearing the Browser Tabs – Turning the Tables with Relentless Cheer Thursday Edition Posted: 18 Aug 2011 03:10 AM PDT Were I a Republican strategist, I’d be studying this Congressional approval poll very carefully. The GOP could score another big win in 2012, and perhaps even take control of the Senate, but that won’t happen unless the party leaders understand that we still are not particularly impressed with them. The set of people with a 13% approval ratings is not exactly filled with the likes of Mother Theresa and ponies. I’m going to go out on a bit of a limb here and suggest that the Republicans do a couple relatively radical things. First, I’d recommend they mostly ignore Barack Obama. It’s obvious that any attention they give him will only come back to them as a pretty wicked attack, so why expend the effort? If they must engage him, they should do so as if he’s an outsider, disconnected from anything but his re-election. They should treat him with the respect his office commands, but that’s it. Call it a polite cold-shoulder. Next, they should work quietly, behind the scenes, with as many Senate Democrats as they believe can be swayed at least a tick in their direction. There is no need to draw any attention away from the next step of the plan, but some quiet coalition-building now will go a long way in just a few months. Lastly, I’d like to see the Republicans in Congress mount an Optimism-O-Rama on as many fronts as possible. Talk up their plans to pull government off of the throats of good Americans who want to give their families better lives. Push bills regularly that will do that very thing, even if some or all of them go down to defeat. Don’t get angry at the losses, but smile and tell America that they’ll keep it up because that’s what we really want of them. They want to help us, so that we can be dynamic and daring and confident and free again. They should work those points into every media appearance, every town hall, and every floor speech. They should be so relentlessly optimist and flat-out in love with America that the Democrats will have to attack their very optimism. That’s when the pity scolding starts. We conservatives can then shake our heads ruefully and note how sad it is that the left can’t do anything else but make fun of America’s success. I know that seems like a huge load of Polyanna, but it’s obvious that the Republicans haven’t done a good job with whatever strategy they’ve used thus far. What could it hurt to try? And now, links!
