Clearing the Browser Tabs – The Job-Seeking Blues Friday Edition Posted: 20 May 2011 03:10 AM PDT I’m not really breaking any news when I say that it’s tough for a young person to find a job. The high unemployment rate of the Obama Economy has driven job seekers into entry-level positions they would not have otherwise taken, and the minimum wage guarantees that there will be fewer of those position available than employers might have if they could hire people at a lower wage. Luckily, The Anchoress’ son Buster has a very clear view of the problems and a sense of humor about his situation. As I have learned recently, most companies deal with applicants at arms’ length, which means that good workers like Buster (and I) don’t have a chance to make a personal impression. Not all companies work that way, but it’s a bigger quest to find a good company that still hires people the old (and best) way as it is to find one that’s hiring people at all. Perhaps good, old-fashioned entrepreneurship really is the best way to find gainful employment, at least until we can change Presidents and drive our economy out of the ditch into which he’s buried us. The podcast link will be out some time today. SMP Mike got it up yesterday, and it’s available through iTunes, but I’ve been a bit jammed up at work and I may be so again today. I’m pretty sure there is no great public clamor for a New York Times television show, but that’s what the once-fine newspaper is going to inflict on the citizens of New York (via mediagazer). If you’re a fan of a mass murderer, you have no room at all to call anyone “cruel”. Carlos Santana’s next album needs to be called “I’m So Very Sorry, America”. “We’re from the government, and we’re here to help…protect you from zombies.” Haven’t we learned by now that laws are for the little people, certainly not for the Democrats who run our country right now? Seriously, folks. If George W. Bush had basically ignored the War Powers Act the way Barack Obama has done with our little adventure in Libya, the left would be heating up humongous kettles of tar and no bird in America would be safe. I’m sure that most of us don’t really care whether we can buy raw milk, especially raw milk from another state, but when you think about it, the issue is important. It’s a matter of who is responsible for managing your risk — you or the Federal government. At some point, if our government keeps playing Nanny State for us, we’ll all end up as big babies. R.I.P. Edward Hardwicke, the greatest of all the Dr. Watsons. Three-sided chess? Yes, please. This scientist has an interesting theory that might help us predict catastrophic earthquakes. First there’s the sun, then a comet crashes into it, then there’s a huge flare. I guess that’s just another day at the office for SOHO.
