Clearing the Browser Tabs – Other Stuff Happened Yesterday Monday Edition

Posted: 02 May 2011 08:47 AM PDT

As you may have heard by now, something happened over in Pakistan yesterday that was just the tiniest bit newsworthy — and reports that a certain The Other McCain blogger just might have had a bit of a hand in it can be neither confirmed nor denied.

Andrew Malcolm has about the most complete timeline of events that led to Osama bin Laden’s long-overdue demise. I recommend you supplement that with this little nugget from Michelle Malkin about the role played by the secret prisons maligned and closed by the President in the raid.

One of the lessons we can learn from last night, especially from the 90 minutes we waited for the President to delivery his announcement, is how the MSM’s traditional ways of doing business have now been relegated to post-event analysis.

And before I get on with all the other things that happened yesterday, here’s one last bin Laden link — video from Ground Zero that just might give you goosebumps.

And now, links!

The Left Celebrates Bin Laden’s Death in Unity and Patriotism and Not A Trace of Political…*snort*

Posted: 02 May 2011 03:10 AM PDT

Well, it certainly didn’t take long last night for a number of notable progressives to turn what should have been a moment of unifying national triumph into a left-wing partisan snark-off. I gleaned a few of the more egregious comments from some of the brighter lights of the left-wing commentariat as they posted them on Twitter.

There are quite a few of them so I put them after the jump. Sit back and bask in the unabashed patriotism, calls for unity, and setting aside of petty political differences. Or, you know, not.

Osama bin Laden is Now an Ex-Terrorist

Posted: 01 May 2011 09:51 PM PDT

The President finally made the announcement at about 11:30 PM, 90 minutes after the White House announced it would do so, and it is official. We have killed the murderous monster Osama bin Laden.

According to the President’s statement (video link), we received intelligence last August about bin Laden’s location and worked the intelligence until some time last week, when the President decided we had enough to take action. He authorized a team of Americans to enter Pakistan, with the permission of the Pakistani government and with Pakistani intelligence officers on the ground, to raid a compound Abbotabad where the al-Qaeda leader was staying with members of his family. The President said our people, believed to be a team of Navy Seals inserted by helicopter, killed him in a “firefight”. An administration source revealed that the intelligence came from captured Islamists in September after years of work that it gained real credibility in February and that the President authorized the assault last Friday.

Tonight, our soldiers launched the assault, earlier reports in my post here. That, at least, explains why the White House called the press conference, though not why they kept the nation on tenterhooks while they polished the statement.

Still, this is a momentous day not only for the United States but for all of civilization. Osama bin Laden was a destroyer, a throwback to days that the world should have discarded many years ago. His death is a net good for everyone and I praise the President for giving the order to launch the assault. I pray that he continues to pursue al-Qaeda relentlessly and with all our strength and cleverness.

I’ve not found the transcript at this point, but when I do, I’ll update this post. In the meantime, here is the video.

I won’t quibble overmuch with what he said. I believe he stole a little credit he didn’t entirely deserve and the “not all Islamists are bad” was gratuitous and unnecessary, as was the part about how our soldiers took care not to kill civilians. Both of those seemed to be a rather backhanded swipe against his political opponents, or at least the prevailing progressive caricature of his opponents.

President Bush also released a statement in support of the President’s actions that was both brief and full of grace and thanks. He deserves a large share of the credit to tonight’s events. If not for his decisiveness and resolve, Osama bin Laden would still be killing Americans safe in Afghanistan and al Qaeda would still be a formidable force flush with millions from Saddam Hussein and with a safe haven and training ground in Iraq.

The beast is dead. Hallelujah.

UPDATE: I’m seeing a number of spontaneous celebrations outside the White House and Ground Zero on CNN right now. I don’t think it’s out of line to say that tomorrow may well feel like a national holiday. That’s as it should be. Expect, though, a number of scolds to show up and rain on the parades or insert their own ridiculous partisan political hackery. When they do, ignore them and celebrate if you feel like celebrating.

Sources: Osama bin Laden is Dead. President: Still Trying to Organize a Press Conference About It

Posted: 01 May 2011 01:12 PM PDT

At about 10 PM Eastern, I caught the breaking news on Twitter that the White House had called a 10:30 PM Press conference that would involve major national security news. Speculation (and more than a few jokes) ran rampant for a half hour. I caught tweets that intelligence personnel had been recalled and the military had been put on a heightened state of alert. Clearly something big was coming down.

Then 10:30 came and…nothing.

Then 10:35 came and…word started popping up on Twitter that the press conference would be delayed until 10:45.

Then…well…it’s now 10:50 and still no press release.

However, about ten minutes ago, Geraldo Rivera on Fox News announced that, according to the network’s White House Producer who had multiple sources, the President would announce that Obama bin Laden is dead. A couple minutes later, I heard John King say on CNN that the news was confirmed “by multiple administration and Congressional sources”.

But we still haven’t seen the President.

How in the world do you call a major press conference on a Sunday night, grab the attention of every television network, and show up late? Worse, how do you then allow or, apparently, leak the news yourself while you’re setting up the press conference? What, exactly, is the point of getting the entire nation worried about potential bad news for a half-hour, miss the first announced time (thus ratcheting up the anxiety level), then let the big news leak before the President ever hit the podium?

I honestly can not believe how incompetent this administration is at delivering a simple, important message. It should not be this hard, yet it appears to be nearly impossible for the Obama White House.

I’ll put up another post once the MSM gets a couple stories up on it, but that might not come until the morning. I’m still seething just a bit about how insensitive and fumble-handed the White House has been in the past hour.

Oh, it’s now 11:00 PM and still no press conference.

UPDATE: 11:05 PM and Wolf Blitzer has reported (on television) that we have bin Laden’s body and that analysis was done to confirm that it is indeed him. Still no President.

UPDATE: 11:02 PM and Jim Scuitto has reported that bin Laden was killed last week is a drone strike. Still no word from the President. Also, apparently the White House couldn’t get a speech written over the weekend. I now have no idea why this merited a special Sunday night press conference.

UPDATE: Wolf Blitzer has reported that the announcement will take place between 11:10 PM and 11:15 PM. A White House source says they’re still working on the announcement. I’m beyond words now.
