Clearing the Browser Tabs – The Anvil of Thursday Edition

Posted: 24 Mar 2011 03:10 AM PDT

At the risk of turning The Sundries Shack into The Cimmerian Yurt, let me share with you a little video tidbit I found while doing some research for the Conan part of the latest episode of The Delivery. I think you will like it.

That is legendary soundtrack composer Basil Poledouris conducting some of his own work from Conan the Barbarian shortly before his untimely death. I warn you, do not play that too loudly in your cubicle, lest it rouse in your a spirit to crush your co-workers, see them driven before you, and hear the lamentation of the women.

And now, links!

Why Does the President Want Us to Buy More Oil From A Crazy Man?

Posted: 23 Mar 2011 09:27 PM PDT

I used to love the Weekly World News. I never minded handing over a couple bucks to learn where Bat Boy had landed to fight the Islamists or the latest “Dick Cheney is a Robot” story. Nearly every page entertained me and, since I’m already a fan of weird fiction, I could imagine a story hook in virtually every article. Alas, the WWN went to a web-only format a while ago, where it’s had to compete with other fantasy-based sites as Think Progress and MS-NBC.

However, I had a WWN flashback when I picked this article from my RSS reader. I admit I held it a day or so, on the off-chance that it was a hoax. So far, it’s holding up. I swear to you, folks, this is a real news story, published by a major media outlet.

Capitalism may be to blame for the lack of life on the planet Mars, Venezuela’s socialist President Hugo Chavez said on Tuesday.

“I have always said, heard, that it would not be strange that there had been civilization on Mars, but maybe capitalism arrived there, imperialism arrived and finished off the planet,” Chavez said in speech to mark World Water Day.

Chavez, who also holds capitalism responsible for many of the world’s problems, warned that water supplies on Earth were drying up.

I’m tempted to laugh off his comments, except that Venezuela is the fifth-leading importer of crude oil to the United States (and not all that far out of fourth). That means that we depend on this barking madman for a critical national need. It also means that, thanks to the President’s decision to essentially end significant domestic oil drilling, we will only grow more dependent on him.

Let me say that again another way: Because Barack Obama won’t let us drill for our own oil, we will have to buy oil from a man who believes that Mars was once a green and pleasant land, full of happy little Martians, until foul capitalism and imperalism showed up and destroyed the entire planet God knows how many millions of years ago.

Does that make even a little bit of sense to you? If so, lease let me know, because it sounds like utter madness to me.

The Delivery Presents – Adventure is Good in Aquilonia, Not Libya

Posted: 23 Mar 2011 02:10 PM PDT

“Between the time when the oceans drank Atlantis, and the rise of the sons of Arius, there was an age undreamed of. And onto this, Episode 84 of The Delivery, destined to wear the jeweled crown of podcasting eminence upon a troubled brow. It is I, its creator, who alone can tell thee of his saga. Let me tell you of the days of high adventure!”

I have been thinking up new drops for the show and it occurred to me that I needed to geek the place up a bit. It also occurred to me that the opening narrative from Conan the Barbarian would make a great drop if I could figure out how to get the right voice and background music. Well, I haven’t found them, but I did mangle the monologue a little bit to fit. And with that mangled quote came the inspiration for last night’s podcast. Okay, there was that quote and several hours of driving during which I had the chance to listen to almost a complete Conan novella in audiobook form (FYI, that book is on sale right now on Audible for less than $16. It’s a great pick-up for almost 18 hours of listening).

Before that, though, I had to get into President Obama’s mystery policy for Libya. I am genuinely flummoxed that not a soul seems to know exactly why were bombing Libya, what “winning” will look like, and who exactly is in charge of the whole affair. As I say toward the end of the first segment, we should not be relying on pure, blind luck to make sure our soldiers make it out of Libya alive. I’m also very surprised that the progressive left, who raised an unholy ruckus for 5 years of the Bush administration has barely uttered a peep about this expedition into murky Constitutional waters.
