Clearing the Browser Tabs – Secretary of Hackery Monday Edition

Posted: 05 Sep 2011 03:10 AM PDT

Hilda Solis is not our current Secretary of Labor because she knows about honest work or how a free market operates. She is there because 1) she knows how to play the political game of favors and rewards, and 2) because she has a long and storied career as a faithful friend to the wealthy union thugs who take money from their middle-class members and spend it on politicians like Hilda Solis.

I can write the above paragraph because of this video, wherein Secretary Solis reveals that she has no earthly idea what sort of job situation exists in the real world. Not only did she not know that Texas is creating jobs hand over fist but once advised of that fact, she was utterly flummoxed about how such a thing could be. All she knew were the talking points hammered into her thick progressive skull by years of living in an echo chamber where no fact dare penetrate lest it die of loneliness. Be sure to watch the video and read the post that accompanies it. The point he makes about her stunning lack of curiosity is important.

And now, links!

  • The power of our government really ought to scare the bejeezus out of all of us and give us plenty of reason for caution before we unleash it on anyone. Consider these two stories about how governments both demand that we coddle kids to their detriment and take them away from their parents because bureaucrats believe they know what is best.
  • This is probably the best piece you will read about the Great Depression, World War II, and big government stimulus all year. It’s long, but don’t let that stop you. You will be amply rewarded with knowledge when you are done.
  • I’m inclined to agree with SimplyZesty that we may never see a real challenger to the iPad, but I don’t believe that’s entirely a bad thing. It’s going to take a while for app developers to push the limits of what can be done with the hardware and we’re all better off with that much innovation and competition. I’d be happier if Apple eased up on its App Store requirements and restrictions. The real problem with the iPad isn’t the device itself but in what it takes to get software on it. On the other hand, there are companies who can fill the need for people who want a solid tablet computer and don’t want to dance to Apple’s iTune.
  • How long will our recession last? Well, given that the administration is still floating numbers spun from unicorn emanations and Leprechaun nail clippings, it could be years.
  • This is great advice about college, especially graduate school, from Penelope Trunk. It’s not just for college students, though. Anyone who wants to strike out in a new direction can find much useful in her post (via Moe Lane, who added a bit of personal experience to the mix).
