Clearing the Browser Tabs – Rhetorically-Hypnotized Friday Edition

Posted: 14 Jan 2011 08:48 AM PST

I’d like to say that this post is a couple hours late because I was adding late-breaking links to it or because I was unavoidably detained doing some critical work for a client. The truth is…heated rhetoric is to blame. I was all set to put this post together last night when I heard a scrap of heated rhetoric. All reason fled and I became as an animal, like Nebuchadnezzar from the Book of Daniel. It was as if I had been hit by a nam-shub from Neal Stephenson’s Snow Crash.

But I got better, so there’s that.

And now, links!

The Delivery Presents – I Got Your Heated Rhetoric Right Here (Also, A New Song Parody).

I’m pretty sure it’s going to be a while before I’m as wound up as I was at the end of the first half of Episode 73, so you all should soak up the passionate rant while it’s there.

Few things get me as wired as someone who doesn’t quite get the First Amendment and thinks they know better than I what I should and should not say. The entire “tone” argument that has arisen around the Arizona shooting exists because far too many people who ought to know better want to treat the First Amendment like a curious artifact of a benighted past. If that doesn’t engender a little passion from those of us who hold our rights dear, I’m not sure what will.

We also premiered a brand new song parody from Greg (VanillaBise in the UStream chatroom) in the mid-show break. He took the segment on my new Kindle from Episode 71 and turned it into a heart-warming love anthem. It’s so good that you could use it on a date the same way you’d use a Barry White song — to turn your date into a melty pile of amour! Here are the lyrics, in case you want to sing along:

[Music starts]
Some say love, it is an Apple, which grows from just a seed.
Some say love, it is a Berry that swee–tens daily deeds.
Some say love, it is a Sony that meets your gaming needs.
I say love, it is a Kindle, the only thing I read.

It’s the art the screen is making that keeps me in a trance.
It’s the screen afraid of breaking when I caress it while we dance.
It’s the Wi-Fi free for the taking, that always wants to give, and the batt’ry never dyin’, that always wants to live.

When the night has been too lonely and the road has been too long
And you think that love is only for the lucky and the strong,
Just remember at Amazon one minute to download,
Lies a book that will reKindle the love beneath your nose.

Paul Shanklin, eat your heart out!

I also dropped my fearless football prognostications for this weekend’s playoff games, including the game you should watch if you could only watch one.
