Clearing the Browser Tabs – A Very Special SmittyPalooza Thursday Edition Posted: 28 Jul 2011 03:10 AM PDT Congratulations to my friend and Stacy McCain’s co-blogger Smitty, who is now the proud father to a brand-new son. Young Jebediah Obadiah Zachariah Jedediah Smith — no, wait, that’s wrong — young Niklas Dietrich Smith is happy and health, as are his very proud parents. Keep the family in your prayers. Smitty is home on leave for a bit, but he’s going to have to head back to Afghanistan to finish his duty there, which will take a few months. And now, links! A couple debt ceiling remnants: AiPolitics on a couple big fibs in the President’s most recent speech and No Runny Eggs on how the GOP really hosed the negotiations (complete with frustrated f-bombs). Lurking in the background of our debt and the ever-increasing cost of our government is a crippling tax called the VAT. We’ve seen a couple trial balloons from Democrats on this already in the past year or so. Don’t be surprised if you see more. It’s official. Out-of-control government has jumped the shark. Hey wait…aren’t the poor supposed to get richer when you “spread the wealth” like our President has? Maybe Lance would be happier if he died while eating a barbequed bear. Tuesday was the 58th anniversary of one of the most cowardly acts in Cuban history. I’d pay money to see a big-name Hollywood production of this great moment in Fidel Castro’s life. To those who say that there’s no point in asking for money for something you already give away for free, Ars Technica would like to fan about 150 hundred-dollar bills in your face (via Techmeme). I enjoyed the first season of The Walking Dead, but I understand that there was some concern among fans that it would not be good for the show if Frank Darabont retained as much control as he did. Well, no need to worry about that now. What effect that will have on the future of the show remains to be seen. Against my better judgement, I’m starting to warm up to the new Alphas show, which probably means it’ll get canceled in the next month. Another year, another Bulwer-Lytton Fiction Contest (via Mediagazer). Some of the winners are very funny. Yesterday was the 71st anniversary of the first appearance of Bugs Bunny in a cartoon called “A Wild Hare”. Go watch!
