How Many People Did Public Sector Unions Kill in NYC?

Posted: 30 Dec 2010 09:42 AM PST

If this story is true, then a lot of public union officials and city workers people need to be in the dock. Soon.

Selfish Sanitation Department bosses from the snow-slammed outer boroughs ordered their drivers to snarl the blizzard cleanup to protest budget cuts — a disastrous move that turned streets into a minefield for emergency-services vehicles, The Post has learned.

Miles of roads stretching from as north as Whitestone, Queens, to the south shore of Staten Island still remained treacherously unplowed last night because of the shameless job action, several sources and a city lawmaker said, which was over a raft of demotions, attrition and budget cuts.

“They sent a message to the rest of the city that these particular labor issues are more important,” said City Councilman Dan Halloran (R-Queens), who was visited yesterday by a group of guilt-ridden sanitation workers who confessed the shameless plot.

Halloran said he met with three plow workers from the Sanitation Department — and two Department of Transportation supervisors who were on loan — at his office after he was flooded with irate calls from constituents.

The snitches “didn’t want to be identified because they were afraid of retaliation,” Halloran said. “They were told [by supervisors] to take off routes [and] not do the plowing of some of the major arteries in a timely manner. They were told to make the mayor pay for the layoffs, the reductions in rank for the supervisors, shrinking the rolls of the rank-and-file.”

This is worse than selfishness; it is criminal negligence. People have died because emergency crews could not travel down unplowed city streets, including a baby born in the blood-spattered vestibule of an apartment building. In several cases, the ambulance crews themselves were stranded for several hours while responding to emergency calls.

And all because public employees unions reportedly threw a city-wide snit.

If I lived in New York City, I’d be on the phone to every legislator I could — city, state, and federal — demanding a full investigation of these reports. If this report is even a little bit true, then people are dead because union officials wanted to play a little hard ball. Well, let’s see how they like playing that hard ball in a jail cell for a decade or so.

Oh, and while we’re at it, let’s decertify every one of the public sector unions involved in this. Shut them all down and never let them come back — not in a year, not ever. They have forfeited any legitimate claim they have that they are responsible advocates for the weak and powerless and have proven themselves a menace to public safety. Public sector unions are our enemies and we should eradicate them without remorse or pity.

Clearing the Browser Tabs – Countdown to 2011 Thursday Edition

Posted: 30 Dec 2010 03:10 AM PST

Can you believe the year is almost done? It seems like just a couple months ago, folks in my area of the country were dealing with the most snowfall we’ve had in over a century and a crushing loss by our beloved hometown Washington Capitals. Summer flew by, as did the Redskins’ hope for football [...]

Sorry, Congressman, but Fascism Didn’t Work that Way

Posted: 29 Dec 2010 08:01 PM PST

Fresh from his being turned out by the voters of New York, soon to be ex-Congressman John Hall could not resist one last lecture for us poor unlearned and unwashed masses. Unfortunately, what he probably intended as a history lesson turned out more like a lesson in histrionics (via memeorandum). In a wide-ranging interview before [...]

The Delivery Presents – Selfishness, CPAC, and Social Media

Posted: 29 Dec 2010 10:00 AM PST

I think SMP Mike really pegged the cover art for Episode 71. I don’t think I’ve ever been as fired up on the air as I was last night and I hope I didn’t sound too angry. Really, though, the foolishness I wrote about last night and talked about in the first half does make [...]

Clearing the Browser Tabs – The Ranty Podcast Wednesday Edition

Posted: 29 Dec 2010 03:10 AM PST

You will either love or hate this week’s episode of The Delivery. I ranted a lot more than usual and my rant, at least in the first half, had an angry edge I don’t think I’ve ever had on the show. I’ll be interested to hear how it sounds myself. the link should come later [...]

Fear, Loathing, and The Ghey at CPAC

Posted: 28 Dec 2010 06:20 PM PST

This is foolishness wrapped in stupidity tied up in a bow marked “political suicide”. Two of the nation’s premier moral issues organizations, the Family Research Council and Concerned Women for America, are refusing to attend the Conservative Political Action Conference in February because a homosexual activist group, GOProud, has been invited. “We’ve been very involved [...]

Clearing the Browser Tabs – Kindle Tuesday Edition

Posted: 28 Dec 2010 03:10 AM PST

My “big” Christmas gift this year was a Kindle 3 and I must say that I’m incredibly impressed with it. My review pretty much squares with Moe Lane’s impressions, and I’ll have a bit more to say about it a little bit later, after I’ve had a chance to get a bit more familiar with [...]

In Space, No One Can Hear the Snowpocalypse

Posted: 27 Dec 2010 09:07 PM PST

Holy crapweasel, that’s a big storm! If you look carefully, you can see snow on the ground in Maryland and farther north. Neat stuff from NASA GOES.

China Is the New Culprit, But What’s the Crisis?

Posted: 27 Dec 2010 08:27 PM PST

Ever since I determined that President Obama has replaced that “The Buck Stops Here” placard with one that says “You Don’t Ever Want A Crisis to Go to Waste” on the Resolute Desk, I’ve been on the lookout for The Culprit. You know who The Culprit is. It’s the person or group who is actually [...]

Old and Busted: Death Panels. New Hotness: Death Doctors

Posted: 27 Dec 2010 11:33 AM PST

You might remember that Sarah Palin was raked over the coals in 2009 for using the phrase “Death Panels” to describe the “Advanced Care Planning Consultations” that were proposed in Obamacare. As the public clamor against the measure mounted, the Democrats swore up and down that the Death Panels didn’t exist, then removed the non-existent [...]

Clearing the Browser Tabs – Mostly Snow-Free Monday Edition

Posted: 27 Dec 2010 03:10 AM PST

Well, the threatened Snowvechkin didn’t happen in the DC Metro area, though points south got a healthy dose of the white stuff and the Northeast heard the distant sound of thundersnow (and may still get a foot or more). We’re probably fortunate that the snow came when it did, since not many folks are going [...]

The Curtain Falls on Curdled Camelot

Posted: 26 Dec 2010 05:17 PM PST

When the 112th Congress is seated next month, we will be free of the Kennedy Blight for the first time in over 60 years. Patrick Kennedy, the hapless and somewhat sympathetic Representative from Rhode Island, will ride off into the sunset and with him will go the curdled remnants of “Camelot”. Beyond John F. Kennedy, [...]

Clearing the Browser Tabs – Boxing Day Sunday Edition

Posted: 26 Dec 2010 03:10 AM PST

I know that, technically, Boxing Day isn’t celebrated until the first weekday after Christmas, but I’ve a feeling that the snowstorm that is quickly approaching the East Coast (which is giving even the best forecasters fits) is going to grab most of the attention Monday, so let’s do Boxing Day today. For those of you [...]

Clearing the Browser Tabs – I Clicked the Links on Chrismas Day Edition

Posted: 25 Dec 2010 03:10 AM PST

I have had the good fortune of making a number of good friends around the country this past year. Some of them I’ve met in person and some I’ve yet to meet, but I cherish each one of them. Friends are hard to come by, at least for me, and I marvel that The Almighty [...]

We Are Haunted by Posts of Christmas Past

Posted: 24 Dec 2010 11:35 AM PST

Before I head out to the Annual Family Christmas Gathering and Gift-O-Rama, I thought I’d give you a few links to some of my favorite Posts of Christmas Past.* Here is some my favorite Christmas Music in one post! There is Handel there, directed by the legendary Robert Shaw, so enjoy. Christmas in London, 1941. [...]

The Delivery Presents – Christmas, Smart-Girl Style!

Posted: 24 Dec 2010 10:08 AM PST

When you listen to Episode 70, two things should become apparent: 1) I didn’t have full control of the show the whole time, and 2) I didn’t want full control of the show the whole time. When you have guests as smart and entertaining as Teri Christoph and Molly Teichmann (and both of them have [...]

Why College? Heck If I Know.

Posted: 23 Dec 2010 09:56 AM PST

Timothy Carney, in today’s Washington Examiner, makes the case against college, and a good case he makes. I’ve long suspected too many kids go to college and finish college — that college is a waste of time and money for many, and our economy and culture would be better if, as a whole, America spent [...]

Clearing the Browser Tabs – ‘Twas the Thursday Before Snowpocalypse Edition

Posted: 23 Dec 2010 03:10 AM PST

The Washington, DC area is all atwitter about the possibility of a sizeable snowstorm due to arrive late on Christmas Day. I have heard forecasts calling for accumulation up to 12 inches, which has more than a few people on the edge of sheer panic. I suppose I can understand their reaction. After last year’s [...]

We’re Going to Need More Vito and Less Tom in the New Congress

Posted: 22 Dec 2010 07:42 PM PST

Let’s face it, conservatives, Barack Obama and Harry Reid cleaned our clocks. We  scored the biggest electoral win for any party since at least the end of World War II, a win so big that even the President was forced to remark on it. Our message — Washington is too damned big and too damned [...]

Obama Won’t End “Indefinite Detention” and No One’s Surprised but Progressives.

Remember when Candidate Obama swore he’d close Guantanamo Bay and make sure we treated those terrorists incarcerated there in a way that would “restore the standards of due process and the core constitutional values that have made this country great even in the midst of war, even in dealing with terrorism”? Yeah, well, so much [...]

This Commercial Brings All the Christmas Joy

Posted: 21 Dec 2010 05:44 PM PST

Keep the Prayers Coming for Andrew

Posted: 21 Dec 2010 05:38 PM PST

There has been no major news in the last couple days about Andrew, who remains in stable (but critical) condition and in a medically-induced coma. Doctors have taken him off one medication and have reduced others and he’s tolerating the new regimen well, which is a small bit of good news. His family has no [...]

If There Is No Nuclear Crisis, Go Out and Create One!

Posted: 21 Dec 2010 04:33 PM PST

I’m just going to go ahead and question the timing here. The latest campaign of the U.S. government focuses on what to do in case of a nuclear attack. The only problem is that, like many government programs, it does not offer much useful advice. According to government officials, the best thing one can do [...]

A Couple Thoughts About the Census

Posted: 21 Dec 2010 01:23 PM PST

The Census Bureau released the results of the 2010 ennumeration and, from a political point of view, the GOP have to be pretty happy about the direction in which the population is moving. Seven states that voted Republican in the past three Presidential election picked up House seats and five that did not lost seats. [...]

The Moon Plays Peek-A-Boo

My plan last night was to wake up not long before 3 AM and catch a good chunk of the lunar eclipse, past totality (which is not terribly exciting viewing) into the unveiling of the moon from the Earth’s shadow (which is incredibly cool). Alas, I also saw Tron: Legacy earlier in the evening and [...]

Clearing the Browser Tabs – Show Prep Tuesday Edition

I have more than the usual number of links today. There were plenty of interesting stories, but I didn’t have much time to write. I spent most of the day making sure I wouldn’t have much work to do the rest of the week. I know, I probably should have saved a little for later, [...]

Chuck Schumer: Weasel or Jerk?

Posted: 20 Dec 2010 01:24 PM PST

This kind of stuff ticks me off. On "Good Morning America" Monday, host George Stephanopoulos asked Sen. Charles Schumer how well he thought Barack Obama is working with Congress and what advice he'd give the president. Schumer advised Obama against dealing with the "hard right," arguing conservative Republicans aim to set the nation back centuries. [...]

Posted: 20 Dec 2010 12:37 PM PST

I like to think I’m more plugged in to science news than the average person, but I don’t think I’m plugged in so much that I believe that NASA had this glorious a year. NASA in 2010 set a new course for human spaceflight, helped rewrite science textbooks, redefined our understanding of Earth’s nearest celestial [...]
