Another Week, Another GOP-Engineered Debate Debacle

Mark Steyn has sung the song in my own heart.

With respect to Hugh and Marc, after almost every one of these debates we at NR and elsewhere say "ABC lost. Big time." and "Big loser: ABC News" – or CNN or MSNBC or whoever it is. And then ten days later (or, in this case, the following morning) there they all are again acquiescing in some condescending media bigfoot's wish to spend 20 minutes discussing whether the Supreme Court has a right to ban diaphragms for transgendered adoptees or whatever hallucinogenic George Stephanopoulos and Diane Sawyer were chugging down in the green room last night.

This country is broke, and the unprecedented scale of its brokeness is an existential threat. Yet, with the exception of Newt's occasional flashes of contempt for the questioners, everyone else plays along with this absurd game. It's not merely that the GOP is letting the left frame the contest but that a party willing to dignify this pitiful charade is sending a broader message about the likelihood of its mustering the determination to stand up to a Democrat-media establishment once in office and effect meaningful course correction.

You should click over there and read Steyn’s remedy to the latest episode of unbridled MSM bias in this past Saturday’s debate.

But we shouldn’t be too hard on the MSM — that is Newt Gingrich’s job. They are who they are. If you expect Diane Sawyer and George Stephanopoulos not to use every means fair or foul to trip up a GOP Presidential candidate, you are a fool. As I have said, almost to the point of exhaustion, the Republican Party has earned all the blame in this election season. If we read a story today that a lion ate several people who had been shoved into its cage by a deranged lunatic, we wouldn’t blame the lion. Well, the GOP has played the role of the deranged lunatic. Fortunately, a couple of the candidates managed to sneak some weaponry in with them to fight back against the lapdog media, but they should never have had to fight in the first place.

There is no shortage of intelligent, informed, and media-savvy right wing people who could have moderated a dozen Presidential debates.I guarantee you the candidates would have gotten real questions about Operation Fast and Furious, the housing debacle, Solyndra, the coming entitlement disaster and not about contraception or Coke vs Pepsi.  They surely wouldn’t have gotten misinformed lectures about illegal combatants or setups about gay marriage (by the way, the most “extreme” GOP candidate has exactly the same position on gay marriage as President Barack Obama and both Democratic Congressional leaders).

Why the GOP has agreed to subject their candidates to the best attacks the Democratic message machine can craft is entirely beyond me. Why we on the right have allowed the GOP to continue in its folly without serious pushback mystifies me as well.

My thoughts have been on other things, so please excuse the shagginess of this compilation, and feel free to emend anything that you find unsuitable.

Despite Dan’s humility, his awards are thoughtful and his list comprehensive. And…I detect a theme.

R.I.P. Tony Blankley

If you have spent any time in the world of conservative politics, you have heard from Tony Blankley. He spent several years as press secretary and adviser to Newt Gingrich and as the editorial page editor of the Washington Times and most recently as a public relations professional, columnist, and media pundit. Before that, he was a child actor, a prosecutor, and a bureaucrat. On top of all that (and a resume that laden with genuine accomplishment should be enough to please any man) Blankley seemed to me to be one of the nicest guys in politics, a profession where being nice is actually an impediment to success. He reached the top of the conservative movement without a trail of broken and bitter rivals nipping away at his heels.

And now, according to his former employer The Washington Times, he has passed away.

Tony Blankley, a noted conservative author and commentator and former editorial page editor of The Washington Times, died Sunday morning, according to family sources. He was 63 and had been battling stomach cancer.

I didn’t know he was sick at all. He worked steadily — I heard him on WMAL-AM’s “Morning Majority” show quite often (and most recently at the end of November) — and I had heard nothing about his illness before, well, today. I wish his family and friends my most sincere condolences. I regret that I did not have the chance to meet Blankley before he passed. I’m sure I would have found him as engaging and good a man in person as he seemed elsewhere.

Eric Holder: Safe Police Officers Are My Top Priority!

If I ever have the chance to write a dictionary, I’ll have a picture of Attorney General Eric Holder right next to the definition of the word “gall”. Holder is easily the most anti-law Attorney General in my lifetime. His Justice Department has repeatedly decided to enforce some laws and not others, to enforce some laws against some people but not against others, and sometimes to ignore the law completely.

With Operation Fast and Furious, he crossed a line I don’t know that the Department of Justice has ever crossed. He put guns in the hands of known killers. On purpose. And yes, I know it’s not been proven that he gave the order, but the DoJ is his responsibility and what it does is on him. That’s what being in a position of responsibility is all about. So it makes me see red when he puffed up his chest and put out a statement as blatantly wrong as he did over the holiday break.

The National Law Enforcement Officers Memorial Fund today released preliminary fatality statistics for 2011, which show a 13 percent increase in the number of federal, state and local officers who died in the line of duty, from 153 in 2010 to 173 in 2011.  The data shows that 68 officers lost their lives in firearms-related incidents, 64 officers were killed in traffic-related incidents and 41 deaths were attributed to other causes.

"This is a devastating and unacceptable trend.  Each of these deaths is a tragic reminder of the threats that law enforcement officers face each day – and the fact that too many guns have fallen into the hands of those who are not legally permitted to possess them," said Attorney General Eric Holder.  "Departments across the country have mourned the loss of too many dedicated colleagues and friends, but my colleagues and I at the Justice Department are determined to turn back this rising tide.  I want to assure the family members and loved ones who have mourned the loss of these heroes that we are responding to this year's increased violence with renewed vigilance and will do everything within our power – and use every tool at our disposal – to keep our police officers safe."

The families of Special Agent Brian Terry and U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement agent Jaime Zapata would dispute that strongly.

Here’s the thing. Holder put this statement out to honor dead police officers. His department is directly responsible for the death of two American police officers and he had the temerity to talk about how bad it is that illegal guns kill cops. If he has a single molecule of dignity left in his body, he’d resign right now, crawl on his hands and knees to those murdered by Operation Fast and Furious guns, and beg their forgiveness.

But he won’t because he doesn’t, so Republicans (and any Democrats who still cherish the Rule of Law) have to make sure he pays for the misery caused by his unconscionable actions. Fast and Furious needs to be on the lips of every GOP Presidential candidate, should come up in every single debate (no matter whether the MSM moderators bring it up), and the GOP itself ought to put out a raft of commercials that demand a full accounting.

Should Auld Acquaintance Be Forgot And Never Brought To…AAAAAAAAAGH!

If you’re like millions of other Americans, you spent New Year’s Eve among family or friends, happily ringing in 2012, wishing each other the very best of a fresh year. Or, you could have been one of the unfortunate folks in Beebe, Arkansas who had to spend the night in fear of getting brained by a crazed dive-bombing starling. No fooling.

Blackbirds have fallen dead from the sky in a central Arkansas town for the second New Year’s Eve in a row.

KATV showed a radar image that it said showed a large mass over Beebe a few hours before midnight Saturday. The Little Rock television station reported that hundreds of birds had died.

Beebe animal control worker Hearst Taylor told KATV the reason for the bird deaths isn’t yet known.

Last year’s mass bird suicide was probably caused by fireworks, which rousted the birds form their roots and sent them into panicked flight. They crashed into houses, poles, each other, and goodness knows what else and left the town wondering what happened. This year though, the local authorities put the kibosh on the fireworks show, so no one is exactly sure why the birds flew to their doom.

This puts me in mind of the classic song “What Are You Doing New Year’s Eve”. You know, that last verse that goes:

Kissing at midnight, the moonlight in your eyes.
Ducking the rain of winged death from the skies.
What are you doing, New Year’s,
New Year’s Eve?

Good times. Good times.

Clearing the Browser Tabs – Gonzo Goes Midwest Edition

Again, the week got past me and I didn’t deliver much in the way of good blogging. Of course that means I need to empty the browser tabs of all manner of good stuff about which I won’t have the chance to write at any real length. My friend Stacy McCain is at large in Iowa with a rented bad-ass Mustang and a bag full of deadlines. He’s covering as many campaign events as he can reach in the aforementioned Mustang before the Iowa Caucuses, which, as it turns out has been quite a few. He’s been to several Santorum events, interviewed the candidate about his hometown Pittsburgh Steelers, then spent some time at Bachmann Campaign HQ when the Occupiers arrived to waft their patchouli stench over everyone. He’s not been to any Gingrich events nor has he visited the Romney folks (given that teams apparent allegies to new media, I don’t expect him to either) but I hope to see a dispatch or two from those campaigns at some point as well. He’s done more reporting in Iowa since Christmas Day than most other members of the MSM, with little else bust hustle and his tip jar (speaking of that, hit it, why don’t you?).

The Delivery Presents – So Maybe It’s Time for a 2012 Plan B

You could call Episode 127 my surrender to Barack Obama and the Democrats. I prefer to look at it as a hard dose of reality applied like a splash of water in the faces of sleepy Republicans. However you view it, I hope you won’t mind that I’ve sounded the charge to the Senate, which we conservatives will have to control whether our next President is Barack Obama or Mitt Romney. The ground is as good as it’s going to get. If we on the right fail, we won’t have any good excuses.

I did continue the politics into the second half. It happens sometimes that current events stack up and I can’t get through all I want in just 30 minutes. I did put a nice little bow on the whole thing about 15 minutes in and spent the rest of the time on a more pleasant subject: the pretty new Roku box I got for Christmas. I have the Roku 2 XD model (and yes, I get a small bounty if you buy one through this link) and I recommend it highly if you’re looking for something to bring the goodness of streaming video to your television. And if someone from Roku happens across this post, well, The Delivery would be a good place to sink a few of your advertising dollars! I’d make you a very good deal.
