Clearing the Browser Tabs – Candidate Overload Thursday Edition Posted: 02 Jun 2011 03:10 AM PDT I admit sometimes I’m not altogether sure that more candidates is better for the Republicans. On one hand, plenty of candidates will provide many opportunities for us to work out our policy differences in time for the general election season. On the other, there is such as thing as too many voices, especially when some of those voices won’t be doing anything but echoing what other better candidates are saying. I say that because Jim Demint, the Senator from South Carolina, is considering a run for the White House. I don’t think he stands a prayer of even finishing in the Top Five at the end of the race and I don’t see what he will add to the conversation as a candidate. Yes, he’s been a conservative stalwart, but that doesn’t mean he’ll make a good candidate. He’d be far more useful as an enthusiastic backer of another candidate (Herman Cain, anyone?), especially in the important primary state of South Carolina. And now, links! Debbie Wasserman-Schultz hasn’t limited her partisan hackishness to Medicare. She’s branched out into immigration and crime, too. However did the Vikings live through global warming? Oh, wait… America flat-out hates Obamacare. Unfortunately, the Democrats aren’t very interested in listening to America.

Harry Reid: Champion of the Common Man, Assuming the Common Man’s a Lobbyist with Bags of Cash Posted: 01 Jun 2011 07:39 PM PDT It is an article of faith that the Republicans are the Party of the Rich Lobbyist, but that turns out not to be so much the truth. Open Secrets took a look at who got the most lobbyist cash over the two-year period of 2009-2010 and, let’s just the if Michael Buffer has announced the winner of that contest, he’d say, “Your winner and still Champeen of Selling You Down the River to Pad the Campaign Coffers and Get Re-Elected is…Senator Harry Reid!” As Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid (D-Nev.) was running for re-election, about $1 out of every $20 he raised for his massive war chest came from a tiny but elite group of Washington insiders: federally registered lobbyists and their immediate family members, according to a new analysis by the Center for Responsive Politics of campaign finance data and lobbying reports. In 2009 and 2010 alone, Reid raised about $919,000 from 572 lobbyists who were registered and actively lobbying during either one of those years, the Center found. That’s more than any other member of the U.S. Senate, but he’s hardly the only member of Congress to post notable numbers. No one even came close. So next time Reid burbles something about special interests and Republicans, you may feel free to laugh in either one of his two faces. (via Tim Carney’s Twitter feed)

Posted: 01 Jun 2011 09:36 AM PDT Episode 96 had it all: 1) Not-so-gentle mocking of DNC Chair Debbie Wasserman-Schultz. 2) Mentions of Anthony Weiner that didn’t include body parts. 3) A special appearance by my good friend, Occasional Spokespuppet Socky the Sock Puppet. 4) A surprise #WeinerGate revelation. 5) An introduction to the matter of over-hyped college degrees. 6) A special birthday message to my friend, the superlative musician Darryl Johnson. Okay, there’s some downer stuff in the first half about how Medicare is doomed unless we do something fairly radical to make sure it stays around and how the Democrats’ “plan” is to saving Medicare what stomping on a choking man’s crotch is to saving his life. Don’t worry, though. You’ll laugh and get a bit ticked off at what’s being done in Congress in your name. In the end, that’s a good thing. We need more happy warriors, and if you can stay angry at the silly political games going on right now while having a good laugh, you’re just where you ought to be right now. Clearing the Browser Tabs – Democratic Debt Mutiny Wednesday Edition Posted: 01 Jun 2011 03:10 AM PDT The House of Representatives refused to raise the debt ceiling yesterday in a vote the MSM is deceptively calling “symbolic”. So much for objectivity, huh? Why it’s almost like the media were using a talking point provided by the House Democratic leadership or something. If this vote was purely symbolic, then why did almost half of the Democrats vote to slap down President Obama and their own leadership? I’ll tell you why. The game has changed. The days when Congress could simply throw our money down any number of ratholes has come to an end. The next debt ceiling vote, the one the MSM won’t call “symbolic”, is going to come with quite a few strings attached. The Democrats want those strings to be radically higher taxes, not just on the “rich”, but on every single one of us. Republicans will be looking to hack away at the budget with a chainsaw. One of those approaches will be good for us. The other will simply be an excuse to do business as usual. Let us hope that the Democrats who mutinied today continue to buck their leaders and vote wisely. Our future truly does depend on it. And now, links! I’ve only heard of the singer Adele from friends, but I like the cut of her non-musical jib. Well, it appears that Jon Huntsman is serious about taking the fight to President Obama. Are we really surprised that the Obama administration has shut the MSM out of its fundraisers? The Lord of the Rings trilogy is coming back to theaters, for one month only. I may have to make a few trips to the movies!

Sooper Genius Anthony Weiner’s Path to Electoral Victory: Sell Republican Books! Posted: 31 May 2011 01:26 PM PDT I’m going to do something a bit daring today and write a post about Anthony Weiner that doesn’t involve his crotch. Last week, he laid out the Democrats’ plan to end the Republican majority in the House. It is, I admit, a clever plan. His idea is to use the Republican plans to save Medicare and Social Security against them and he’s doubly excited because those foolish, foolish young Republicans actually put their plans into a book. That you can buy! House Republicans have laid out the pathway to their own decline, some liberal Democrats said this week. “Young Guns,” a book authored last year by GOP leaders Eric Cantor (Va.), Kevin McCarthy (Calif.) and Paul Ryan (Wis.), was packaged as a blueprint for a new brand of conservatism under a Republican-controlled House. But Rep. Anthony Weiner (D-N.Y.) said the book also provides a roadmap for the Democrats to retake the House in next year’s elections. [...] “We should just give everyone a copy of it, because they also propose privatizing portions of Social Security,” he said. “I hope to get a spike in Amazon of people buying that book.” So do I, because the plans to save two programs that do need to be saved are worth knowing. Heck, I’d encourage Weiner to get together with the Sooper Geniuses at the DNC and buy every American a copy of the book. Drop them from helicopters like they were turkeys at a WKRP Thanksgiving Day stunt. Buy the e-book rights and make the whole thing available on the web for free. That’s a winning strategy, right there. If only the GOP has an effective social media team in place right now to take advantage of that. I bet they could make sections of the book available to anyone who wants it, complete with Anthony Weiner’s eager endorsements. They might even have people banging away on Facebook and Twitter and a hundred different blogs spreading the message that the Democrats’ plan, boiled down to its essence, is to let old people die. Weiner’s goal here couldn’t be more clear. He’s not concerned about Medicare, even though it’s collapsing like a popsicle-stick bridge under an elephant parade (see Veronique de Rugy’s new spending projections for the very scary details). It doesn’t matter to him, or his cohort Debbie Wasserman-Schultz, that his party treats our senior citizens like drooling morons who will die unless the Democratic Party leads them to safety. He doesn’t even care that the “death panels” he insists do not exist are on their way (via memeorandum). Nope. All he cares about is scaring the bejeezus out of enough voters to eke out a win for his side in November of 2012. That is his strategy — his entire strategy. That makes me just a tad bit angry. I hope it does the same to you.
